Broken Down?
Safety Advice
Your safety is our priority.
Choose below for location specific advice:
The most important thing to do when you encounter problems on a smart motorway is to get to a place of safety as soon as possible. It can be a terrifying situation, especially if you break down on a live lane.
A smart motorway does not always have a hard shoulder.
What to do if you breakdown on a smart motorway:
Get to an Emergency Refuge Area (ERA)
If you can still drive your vehicle, exit the motorway at the next junction or get to a service area.
If you cannot drive off the motorway, aim for the next emergency refuge area (ERA)
2. Broken down on a live lane?
Attempt to get the vehicle to the leftmost lane and as far off the motorway as you can.
Turn your hazard warning and side lamps on as soon as possible.
If you are in lane one or left-hand lane and it is safe to do so, get out off the vehicle through the left-hand or passenger side door and wait behind the barrier.
If you cannot get out of the vehicle or in another live lane and it is not safe to exit the vehicle, stay in the car with your seat belt on and call the POLICE 999.
3. Call for assistance.
If you have been able to exit the motorway or you are in a safe place, you can then give us a call and request for assistance.
If you have stopped in an emergency refuge area (ERA), you must use the SOS phone to contact the Regional Control Centre.
If you are stuck on a live lane, you must call 999 immediately.
