Have a flat tyre or a blowout?
What to do if you have a flat or damaged tyre:
A flat or damaged tyre can result from various issues, such as a puncture, sidewall damage, a leaking tyre valve, incorrect wheel alignment or even problems with the wheel itself. Here's how you can tell and what to do about it:
Signs that you may have a tyre failure:
Heavy or unresponsive steering
Resistance when rolling slowly
A persistent pull to one side
Increased noise from a tyre during cornering
Warning from the tyre pressure monitoring system
Tyre edges balding - inconsistant tyre tread depth.
What to do:
Ensure safety: Pull over to a safe location away from traffic, turn on your hazard lights and engage the handbrake. Use a warning triangle if you have one. Please note - it is not safe to use a warning triangle on a motorway.
Check the tyre: Inspect the damage to determine if it’s a puncture, sidewall damage or another issue.
Check tyre pressures: If the damage seems minor, check the tyre pressure to see if reinflating could help (use a tyre repair kit if necessary).
Taking care of your car's tyres by maintaining correct pressures, regularly checking for damage, rotating tyres and avoiding road hazards will prevent unexpected breakdowns.
DISCLAIMER - Before attempting to check or work on your car's tyre or wheel, always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and safety glasses. If you’re unsure of how to proceed or uncomfortable performing any of these steps, it’s always best to contact a qualified mechanic. Attempting to resolve tyre or wheel related issues without the proper knowledge can be hazardous, both to you and your vehicle. A qualified technician can diagnose the problem safely and offer the appropriate solutions.
