The most important thing to do when you encounter problems on the motorway is to get to a safe place and call for assistance.
What to do if you breakdown on a motorway:
Get off the motorway.
If possible, exit the motorway as soon as you can.
If you cannot, pull onto the hard shoulder.
Ensure you stop as far to the left as possible, with wheels turned all the way to the left.
Exit the vehicle through the left-hand door.
2. Become visible.
Turn on your hazard warning lamp to alert other road users.
Turn your side lamps on.
Wear a high visibility (hi-vis) jacket if you have one.
3. Wait at a safe place.
Exit the vehicle through the doors opposite the passing traffic and wait behind a barrier.
You must leave any animals in the car.
Move up the bank or verge if you can.
Always monitor oncoming traffic. Remain alert of any vehicles or debris coming towards you.
4. Get Help
Call us to get assistance.
It is not safe to attempt any repairs on your vehicle
If you do not have access to or unable to use a mobile phone, you can walk to an emergency (SOS) phone. The phones are free and connects directly to the Police or National Highways.
