What to do when your vehicle breaks down?
General Advice:
Move your vehicle off the road if possible, ensuring you're not on soft verges or in a dangerous position.
If you’re on a standard motorway and can't exit at the next junction, pull onto the hard shoulder. Stop as far to the left as you can and ensure your wheels are turned to the left.
On a smart motorway, aim to get to an Emergency Refuge Area (ERA) or an exit slip road. If you enter an ERA, park within the marked area, usually aligned with the emergency (SOS) telephone. This ensures those assisting you to park behind or ahead of you as required.
Once your vehicle is repaired, you must contact the Regional Control Centre via the emergency (SOS) phone before leaving the ERA to arrange for the lane to be closed or diverted.
Never leave the ERA unless advised to do so by National Highways, the Police or your breakdown patrol confirms it is safe to do so.
If you're unable to reach an ERA or slip road on a smart motorway, turn on your hazard lights and move your vehicle as far left as possible, leaving enough room to open the left-hand door. In low visibility conditions, you should also switch on your side lights. Once you have done this, you must then dial 999 and inform the police.
If it's safe to leave the vehicle, exit through the left-hand door and stand well clear of the vehicle and moving traffic—ideally behind any barrier (if available), on the embankment or verge, and facing oncoming traffic. Please be cautious of soft or uneven grass verges. DO NOT stand in a place where your vehicle could colide with you should an accident happen. DO NOT attempt repairs on your vehicle.
Once National Highways has relocated your vehicle to a safe location, contact Middlesex Roadside Assistance for further assistance and inform us of your current or new location.
Visibility:
Wear a high visibility (HI-VIS) clothing if you have it and is within reach.
Ensure the vehicle's hazard warning lamps and side lamps are on.
Place a warning triangle or permited warning devices if you have them. DO NOT use any warning triangles or devices on the motorway.
